The workbench:
Give it a brief and a number. Get a set of ads back by morning.
Most creative tools are a chat box. The workbench is a project: a brief, every version of every ad with its history, and a generator that returns a set of ads, one per angle. Free typing is used only to improve one ad at a time.
Eight kinds of copy on the beta: headlines, headline sets, body copy, video hooks, calls to action, email subject lines, email bodies, landing page openers.
Six headlines, six angles, from your brand memory.
Example brand, a coffee roaster. Invented to show the format.
How a set is made:
The brief
Goal, channel, format, customer type, product, the idea being tested, how success is measured, deadline, limits. Filled in as a form, so the next person can read it and the Lab can use it.
What it will use
Before it writes anything, the Lab shows what it will use: which brand sections, which past winning ads, which customer type. You can see it every time and change it if you want.
Angles first
Scarcity, social proof, authority, curiosity, usefulness, aspiration, or your own. All selected to start; untick what you do not want. Six ads across six angles, not six versions of one.
Keep, drop, improve
One key each. Dropping an ad asks for a reason (off-brand, too aggressive, too soft, wrong angle, generic) and that reason shapes the next set.
Improving one ad
The one place you type freely. “Make it punchier.” “Drop the question.” Each improved version is saved under the one it came from. Both stay, and you can see the chain.
Send it to the ad account
Hand the project to a colleague with a note and an automatic summary of what happened. The history shows every set generated, every ad dropped or improved, and every approval, with the person who did it.
A set, as it lands:
| Angle | Headline | Characters | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scarcity | The spring roast is 400 bags. Then it is next spring. | 48 | Pass |
| Social proof | The roast 2,000 people reordered in March. | 42 | Pass |
| Authority | Roasted by the people who set the cupping standard. | 50 | Flag: “set the cupping standard” needs a source |
| Curiosity | The one bean we would not sell last year. | 41 | Pass |
| Utility | Ground for your machine. Say which one. | 39 | Pass |
| Aspiration | The morning you meant to have. | 30 | Pass |
Example brand (a coffee roaster) and example headlines, invented to show the format. The flag is the compliance check finding a claim the brand has no proof for.
